How we tested: we installed every theme on the same clean WordPress site with the same content and no extra plugins, then measured the homepage with Google Lighthouse on mobile. Because the content is identical, the differences below are the theme itself rather than a demo’s photography. Lower is better, and the gap between the top and bottom of this table is roughly five times the page weight.

How to pick a free WordPress theme

• Check the last update, not the design. A theme that has not shipped in a year is a security problem waiting to happen. Every date on this page comes from the WordPress.org API and is shown on each entry.
• Read the install count as a support signal. A theme on hundreds of thousands of sites has answers on the internet when you get stuck. One on two hundred sites does not.
• Decide about page builders before you choose. A block-first theme and a builder-first theme pull in opposite directions, and switching later means rebuilding pages.
• Weight is the cost you pay forever. The gap between the top and bottom of our table is around five times the page weight, on identical content, before you have added a single photograph.
• Check the starter sites are actually free. Many themes advertise a large template library and then gate the good half behind Pro. Where that is true here, the entry says so.
• Never install a nulled theme. Paid themes distributed free are routinely modified to include backdoors, and the saving is not worth rebuilding a hacked site.
