9 Best Free Nature & Environmental WordPress Themes 2026
The free nature and environmental WordPress theme category is much thinner than the search results suggest, so this list is short on purpose: Astra’s Love Nature starter, GeneratePress with its Botanist demo, and Kadence’s Yosemite national-park template are the three worth starting from. There are 9 free themes here and 6 paid ones, and every single entry is shown running a real nature, garden or eco demo rather than a generic homepage.
We went looking properly before writing this. Two sweeps of the WordPress.org directory covering more than 1,800 themes, and a scan of fourteen vendor demo libraries against three dozen nature keywords, turned up what you see below and almost nothing else. Themes named after nature exist in quantity, but nearly all of them sit under a thousand installs with no working demo to show you. What does exist, and works well, are the big free frameworks that ship a finished eco or garden site you can import in a click.
Related roundups: charity and nonprofit themes if you are raising money for an environmental cause, and green energy themes for solar and renewables specifically.

We tested it: free nature theme speed
How we tested: we installed each free theme on the same clean WordPress site with identical content and no extra plugins, then measured the homepage with Google Lighthouse on mobile. Nature sites lean on big landscape photography more than most, so the theme’s own weight is the budget you have left before your images start costing you visitors.

Free frameworks with a real nature starter
This is where the category actually lives. Each of these is a general-purpose theme that ships a finished nature, garden or eco site you import in a click, and each one below is shown running that starter rather than its default homepage.
1. Astra

Free · Pro available
1M+ active installs · 4.9★ (6.5K)
Updated Sep 2026 · Six free nature starters
Best for: A conservation group or nature nonprofit
Why we like it: Six free nature starter sites, more than every other theme on this page put together.
Astra’s free starter library carries Love Nature, Sierra Nature, Outdoor Adventure, Planet Earth, Gardening & Landscaping and Horticulture, all importable without the Pro plan. That breadth is the reason it leads this list: whatever kind of nature site you are building, one of them is close to it already.
✅ Pros: by far the widest choice of nature starters, extremely large community, light ⚠️ Cons: the starters need the Starter Templates plugin, and the deeper design controls are in Astra Pro

2. GeneratePress

Free · Premium $59/yr
500K+ active installs · 5.0★ (1.4K)
Updated Dec 2025 · Botanist & Arborist demos
Best for: A photo-heavy site that must stay fast
Why we like it: The lightest theme we measured, which is what buys you room for full-width landscape photography.
GeneratePress ships almost nothing you did not ask for, so the page weight left over is yours to spend on images. Its site library includes Botanist, a plant shop built around ‘Nature’s way’, and Arborist for tree surgeons, both of which read as real businesses rather than theme demos.
✅ Pros: fastest in our test, immaculate code, perfect rating ⚠️ Cons: the site library needs GP Premium, and the free theme is visually plain to start with

3. Kadence

Free · Pro available
500K+ active installs · 4.9★ (453)
Updated Jul 2026 · Yosemite, Flower Farm, Outdoor Shop
Best for: Parks, campgrounds and outdoor venues
Why we like it: Yosemite is a complete national-park campground site, with facilities, attractions and a reservation flow.
Most nature starters are a hero photo and three columns of text. Yosemite has schedules, gallery, facilities, ways to stay, a support and FAQ section and a Reserve Now path, which is what an actual park or campground needs. Kadence also has Flower Farm and Outdoor Shop if you are selling rather than hosting.
✅ Pros: the most complete outdoor starter here, free header and footer builders, fast ⚠️ Cons: check which starter templates your plan includes, and its block library is another system to learn

4. Blocksy

Free · Pro from $69/yr
300K+ active installs · 5.0★ (872)
Updated Sep 2026 · Free Floreo plant starter
Best for: A plant nursery or indoor-garden shop
Why we like it: Floreo imports a working plant shop, and Blocksy is among the lightest themes we measured.
Floreo is built around ‘Beautiful Plants For Your Interior’, with products, services and a blog already arranged, so a nursery or plant retailer has a shop rather than a blank page on day one. Blocksy also holds a perfect rating across several hundred reviews.
✅ Pros: free working plant-shop starter, among the fastest measured, the best rated framework ⚠️ Cons: the starter ships with placeholder copy and stock products to replace

5. Neve

Free · Pro available
200K+ active installs · 4.7★ (1.2K)
Updated Aug 2026 · Free EcoRoot template
Best for: A zero-waste or refill shop
Why we like it: EcoRoot is a finished zero-waste store, and Themeisle lists it as free rather than Pro.
Most eco templates stop at a mission statement. EcoRoot is an actual shop for a refill and zero-waste business, with products and a cart, on a theme built to load quickly. For a small sustainable brand that needs to sell, it is the closest thing here to a finished site.
✅ Pros: a genuine eco shop template at no cost, very light, works with any builder ⚠️ Cons: much of the wider template library is Pro, so check before planning around it

6. OceanWP

Free · Pro available
500K+ active installs · 4.9★ (5.7K)
Updated Sep 2026 · Garden and Organic demos
Best for: A garden centre or organic grocer
Why we like it: One of the few big frameworks with a garden demo and an organic food demo already built.
OceanWP runs a Garden demo for landscaping and plant retail and an Organic one for fruit and vegetable shops, both complete sites rather than colour variations. With half a million installs and nearly six thousand reviews behind it, it will still be maintained as your site grows.
✅ Pros: two separate nature demos, enormous user base, extends easily ⚠️ Cons: the more useful shop features sit in paid extensions, and it runs heavier than the leanest frameworks

Free themes for nature and wildlife publishing
If you are writing about the natural world rather than selling to it, these two put photography and article layouts first.
7. ColorMag

Free · Pro available
40K+ active installs · 4.9★ (1.5K)
Updated Sep 2026 · Wild Magazine demo
Best for: A wildlife or conservation publication
Why we like it: Wild Magazine is a working wildlife news site, with real conservation headlines rather than lorem ipsum.
ColorMag is a magazine theme, and ThemeGrill maintains a Wild Magazine build of it covering animal and conservation reporting. If your nature project is editorial rather than commercial, this gives you a front page designed to carry a lot of stories at once.
✅ Pros: a genuine wildlife publishing demo, 1,600 reviews at 4.9, built for high article volume ⚠️ Cons: no ecommerce or donation layouts, and magazine grids are busy by nature

8. Nature Bliss

Free on WordPress.org
700+ active installs · 5.0★ (3)
Updated Jan 2026 · Small theme · Built for green business
Best for: A small green business or environmental group
Why we like it: The only dedicated free nature theme we found that is still maintained and has a working preview.
Nature Bliss was written for environmental green businesses and non-profit organisations specifically, rather than adapted from a business theme. It is genuinely small — a few hundred sites and three reviews — and the only demo available is the WordPress.org preview, so judge the layout rather than the sample content.
✅ Pros: purpose-built for environmental organisations, perfect rating so far, simple to configure ⚠️ Cons: a very small user base, only three reviews, no vendor demo of its own, and the heaviest theme in our test

One-page themes for a landscape-led site
When the photography is the argument, a single scrolling page of full-width image bands does more than a conventional site structure.
9. Shapely

Colorlib theme · maintained by us
Free on WordPress.org
10K+ active installs · 4.6★ (67)
Updated Sep 2026 · Full-width image sections
Best for: Letting landscape photography carry the page
Why we like it: Full-bleed parallax image bands, which is the right structure when the photography is the argument.
Shapely builds a page from wide image sections stacked with text, so a conservation project or a landscape photographer can lead with a picture that fills the screen. Its demo is a general one-page layout rather than a nature site, so look at the structure here, not the sample copy. It is our most downloaded theme and still ships releases.
✅ Pros: full-width parallax image sections, WooCommerce ready, maintained by us ⚠️ Cons: no nature demo of its own, and heavier than the modern frameworks

Paid nature & environmental WordPress themes
The paid side of this category is far healthier than the free side, which is the honest summary of the whole page. These are themes built specifically for environmental organisations, landscapers and green businesses, and every one below has a working vendor demo we opened. Where we could not verify a sales figure or price against the marketplace, we have left it out rather than repeat a number we have not checked.
10. Eco Nature

Paid, $69 · ThemeForest
4,000+ sales · 4.5★ (146)
Environment & ecology · Vendor demo live
Best for: An environmental organisation or NGO
Why we like it: The long-standing best seller in this category, and the one most competitor lists lead with.
Eco Nature is built for environmental groups rather than adapted to them: campaign pages, causes, events and volunteer sign-up are all part of the theme rather than plugins you bolt on. CMSMasters still runs its demo, which in a category littered with dead demo domains is worth noting.
✅ Pros: the category leader by sales, campaign and volunteer layouts included, demo still maintained ⚠️ Cons: the design has been around a while, and it is heavier than the free frameworks

11. Green Earth

Paid, $79 · ThemeForest
3,500+ sales · 4.3★ (298)
Environmental · GoodLayers · Vendor demo live
Best for: A green business with services to sell
Why we like it: Nearly 300 ratings and three and a half thousand sales, on a theme aimed at commercial green businesses.
Where Eco Nature leans nonprofit, Green Earth leans business: services, projects and quote requests sit at the front. GoodLayers builds it on their own page builder, so the layouts are editable without buying a separate plugin.
✅ Pros: strong sales record, service and project layouts, own page builder included ⚠️ Cons: the lowest rating of the paid themes here, and its builder locks your layouts in

12. Greenergy

Paid · ThemeForest
Bold Themes · 2 complete demos
Ecology & environment · Earth and Air builds
Best for: An ecology or renewables organisation
Why we like it: Two complete demo sites, Earth and Air, rather than one design in two colourways.
Greenergy is Bold Themes’ ecology and environment theme, and the Earth and Air demos are genuinely different sites with their own structures and page sets. It is the most current-looking option in a category where a lot of the best sellers were designed years ago.
✅ Pros: two distinct complete demos, a modern design, actively maintained vendor ⚠️ Cons: far fewer sales than the category leaders, and we could not verify its price to quote it here

13. Green Planet

Paid · ThemeForest
CMSMasters · Donations & campaigns
Environmental non-profit · Events and volunteers
Best for: An environmental charity that fundraises
Why we like it: The only theme here that ships donations, campaigns, events and volunteer sign-up as part of the theme.
Green Planet is built for environmental organisations that raise money rather than just campaign: a donate flow, named campaigns, an events calendar and a join-us path are all part of it. That is the exact gap our advice section flags, and no free theme on this page covers it.
✅ Pros: donations and campaigns built in, events and volunteer sign-up, demo actively maintained ⚠️ Cons: overkill if you are not fundraising, and we could not verify its current price to quote it

14. Gardena

Paid · ThemeForest
Bold Themes · 2 complete demos
Landscaping & gardening · Quote and project pages
Best for: A landscaping or garden-services business
Why we like it: Built for landscapers specifically, with before-and-after project galleries and a quote request flow.
Gardena is the only theme here aimed squarely at garden services rather than the environment as a cause. Its project pages include before-and-after comparisons, which is exactly how landscaping work sells itself, and there is a quote request path built in.
✅ Pros: before-and-after project galleries, quote request built in, two complete demos ⚠️ Cons: narrow — little use outside garden and landscaping services — and its price is not published on the demo

15. Divi + Environmental Nonprofit layout pack

$89/yr or $249 lifetime · Elegant Themes
Unlimited sites on one licence
Free environmental layout packs · Visual builder
Best for: Designing an environmental campaign yourself
Why we like it: Free Environmental Nonprofit, Gardener and Green Energy layout packs, on a licence covering every site you build.
Divi’s argument in this category is choice: several nature and environmental layout packs come free with the subscription, and you edit them visually rather than through theme options. For an agency running sites for more than one environmental client, the unlimited licence is the case on its own.
✅ Pros: several free nature layout packs, full visual control, unlimited sites ⚠️ Cons: adds page weight, and leaving Divi means rebuilding your layouts

What to look for in a nature or environmental theme
- Image weight is the whole game here. Nature sites live on big landscape photography, and a theme that starts heavy leaves you no budget for it. Our table below measures each theme before a single photo is added, which is the fairest way to see what you are starting with.
- Check the demo is a nature site, not a nature name. This category is full of themes called Eco, Green or Nature whose only demo renders WordPress test content about a boat. If the vendor cannot show you the theme running an actual nature site, that tells you something.
- If you take donations, the form matters more than the homepage. An environmental nonprofit needs recurring giving, a pre-selected suggested amount and a working payment path. Most themes here do not include that, and it is usually better handled by a donation plugin than by the theme.
- Events and volunteers are the other half of a conservation site. Beach cleans, planting days and surveys need dates, locations and sign-ups. Astra’s and Kadence’s starters cover this; most of the small dedicated themes do not.
- A general framework with a nature starter beats a nature-named theme. That is the honest conclusion from building this list. The frameworks are faster, far better maintained, and their nature starters are more complete than the themes named after the niche.
- Watch for demos that need the Pro version. Several vendors advertise a gardening or eco demo that turns out to run the paid theme. We checked, and where a demo is the Pro build we have said so or left the theme out.
- Green energy and solar are a different category. If you are selling solar panels or renewables rather than campaigning, the specialist themes for that are a better fit than anything on this page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free nature WordPress theme?
Astra, because its free starter library includes six separate nature templates — Love Nature, Sierra Nature, Outdoor Adventure, Planet Earth, Gardening & Landscaping and Horticulture — so whatever you are building, one is close to it. If speed matters most, GeneratePress with its Botanist demo is lighter.
Why are there so few free nature themes?
Because almost none of them are maintained. We swept the WordPress.org directory twice, covering more than 1,800 themes, and scanned fourteen vendor demo libraries. Themes named after nature exist in quantity, but nearly all sit under a thousand installs, most have not been updated recently, and their vendors’ demo sites no longer resolve. The working supply is the big frameworks with nature starters.
Can I use a nature theme for an environmental nonprofit?
Yes, though you should treat donations as a separate decision. Pick the theme for how it handles photography, campaigns and events, then add a donation plugin like GiveWP for the giving side. Our charity roundup covers that in more depth.
Do I need a paid theme for a nature site?
This is one category where the paid option is genuinely stronger. The free side is thin and framework-led; paid themes like Eco Nature and Greenergy are built for environmental organisations from the start. That said, Astra plus a good donation plugin will serve most small groups perfectly well.
What makes a nature site slow?
Uncompressed landscape photography, almost always. A 4MB hero image will undo any theme’s performance. Export at the size you actually display, use modern formats, and let WordPress serve responsive sizes. Choosing a light theme buys you room, but the images are what you have to manage.
Are there free themes for gardening and landscaping businesses?
Yes, but through the frameworks rather than dedicated themes. GeneratePress has Arborist for tree surgeons, OceanWP has a Garden demo, Kadence has Flower Farm and Astra has Gardening & Landscaping. For a paid option built specifically for the trade, Gardena has before-and-after project galleries.
What about wildlife photography blogs?
ColorMag’s Wild Magazine demo is the closest free fit, since it is designed to carry a lot of image-led stories. If you want the photography full-screen instead, Shapely’s full-width image sections suit a single scrolling portfolio.
Will these themes work with the block editor?
All the frameworks here do, and Neve, Blocksy and Kadence are built around it. Nature Bliss and Shapely are older in design and lean on the customizer more, which is worth knowing if you plan to build pages from blocks.
Which one should you use?
For most nature and environmental sites, install Astra and import whichever of its six nature starters is closest to your project — that is the shortest path to a finished site. Choose GeneratePress instead if your photography is the point and you want the lightest possible base for it, or Kadence if you run a park, campground or outdoor venue that needs schedules and bookings. If you are an environmental organisation with a budget, Eco Nature is the category’s proven choice and will save you assembling campaign pages yourself. And whichever you pick, compress your photographs before you worry about anything else on this page.
